Quinn and I went to the British Museum Friday. Rhys was a bit sick with a cold, so Tracy and him went to today. One of the great things in London, is most of the museums and galleries have no admission fees. So, we visited a number of them; British, London, Natural History, Science Museums and the Tate Art Gallery. Frankly, the places can be a bit overwhelming; huge expanses of information, displays, antiquities, artifacts, sculptures, art, etc. So, you need a plan of attack before going. Be selective in what to see, research ahead (most have links on their website for “educators”), pack a lunch and go slow.
We’ve included the museum trips into Quinn and Rhys’ homeschooling. Sometimes it is mind maps of what they learn, others have booklets handed out to activities, or if you’re lucky, online tutorials. Also, as part of homeschooling, we’ve been using the https://www.khanacademy.org/ – which has a partnership with the British Museum, so the kids did online tutorials first, and then we visited. It helped us focus our attention to the areas of the museum of interest to them, and made the experience much better.
See about the Rider fan below ……
Neat to see stuff like the Mummies – especially as we’ve seen “Gebelein Man” on an episode of PBS Nova.
